You can expect after the 14 weeks of training to be able to run at least 10km. The key will be patience and support from friends, coaches and others runners from the group and the club.
Depending on your starting ability, for the first few weeks you will combine walking with running. For instance:
Week 1: walk 50 seconds and run for 10 seconds, then repeat
Week 2: walk 45 seconds and run for 15 seconds, then repeat, etc.
The rate of increase will depend on your rate of progress. Definitely no-one will be left behind.
Initially, this will be running around the cricket field in groups, then along paths behind the cricket club and eventually out on the street.
It is recommended that you run at least on one other occasion throughout the week between Wednesday course nights, hopefully with someone of a similar standard whom you have met on the course or a member of PRC.
At the end of the course, PRC will stage a 10K run which we hope all beginners will enter and complete. Those who do complete will get a medal.
On completion of the course, you will be awarded a certificate for your achievement.
We hope all entrants will go on to join Pickering Running Club and continue running regularly with us, though of course that is optional. You may even want help with the coaching in subsequent years!
The course is available to people with the commitment to do a 10k run, who are aged 18 or over and have no debilitating health condition. We hope and expect to have not just whipper-snappers on the course, but also people in their 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s on the course.
If you have no running experience at all, or some experience but you don't yet enjoy running, then this course will be ideal for you.
The course is organised by members of Pickering Running Club, a friendly vibrant group of 50+ runners from across Ryedale. PRC is a twin-based club with a club house in Malton as well as in Pickering. Weekly club training run takes place on Thursday evenings at 7:15pm and Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm, and the venue generally alternates between the vicinities of Pickering and Malton.
The members of Pickering Running Club recognize that many people would like to get into running but face barriers to them doing so, such as a lack of confidence, a lack of support from friends and family, a fear of the unknown, or a seemingly insurmountable lack of fitness
Because we are the local running club, we recognise a certain obligation to do what we can to help aspiring runners in Ryedale overcome those barriers. All our members have discovered the benefits that regular running can offer, several having gone through those barriers themselves so can testify both to the difficulty of doing so but also how their lives have changed for the better.
The principle coaches will be Daniel Froggatt and Graham Harrison of Pickering Running Club, both accredited by England Athletics to lead groups of runners.
